ITHE Lakota`s got their horses from other Tribes, eater by stealing them or by trade around 1760. They soon discovered the value of this Sunk Tanka – Big Dog or Sunka Wakan – Holy Dog. From being a poor people and newcomers to the Great Plains across the Big Muddy – The Missourie River, they now were able to raid and scare away other Tribes in the area around and in the Paha Sapa - The Black Hills. They became exelent Horsemen and breaded these useful animal . They pretty soon controlled the Dakotas, parts of Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana.

To the Lakota`s the Horse became man,s best friend. The Horse signaled to the rider with the ears if lurking enemy were over the next Hill. In battle the rider or warrior painted the Horse after his vision, most likely in form of Hail dots or lightning, tied an Eaglefeather to the mane and braided or tied up the Pony`s tail to prevent the enemy grabbing the tail. This was also a provocation for the enemy.
