I have the Diary of Lt. J. G. Bourke, for 1881, when he attended the Pine Ridge Sun Dance.
He met Young Man Afraid of His Horse, and he remarks that YMA was the half-brother of Spotted Eagle, who was a war-leader of the “hostile” Sans Arcs who had been in exile in Canada, 1877-81, with Sitting Bull. From that I deduce that YMA’s mother was also the mother of Spotted Eagle, presumably by another marriage. Possibly she was a Sans Arc (ItazipcoI, or one of the orther Northern divisions of the Lakota.
